Troubles in Tibet (Current Event)

Recent developments in Tibet have sparked controversy and protests around the world. Protests are being held as a response to China’s hard-line rule over the region while others are using protests to show their support of the Chinese government. The protests in Tibet have turned deadly with reports saying that up to 140 Tibetans have been killed. With Beijing to host the summer Olympics many Tibetan supporters are asking countries like Canada to boycott the Beijing Olympics. Is boycotting the Olympic games the right course of action? What are your thoughts?

Student Conferences: What is the Value?

The most recent edition of the Rouleau School student conference has wrapped up for another year. It was a packed two days with five schools and close to 250 students in attendance. This event has prompted the current event posting for this week. An enormous amount of work goes into planning an event like this and sometimes adults wonder if students are really receiving any value from these events. In your opinion are student conferences are worthwhile event? Why or why not? Do students view these events as just a way to miss regular classes? What works and what doesn’t? Should these events be mandatory for students to attend? What topics are more appropriate to a student conference format compared to others? Please feel free to comment on the Real Deal 2008 or another student conference that you have attended.

Current Events (March 10, 2008) – Education & Technology

The following video shows how the Apple iPhone may revolutionize how students learn. The video uses a university setting (each student is provided an iPhone when they register) but how might this look at the high school level? Would you like to learn in this manner? Do cell phones, PDA’s, iPods have a place in the school setting other than student’s communicating with each other? What are your thoughts?

The Big Race

The following video is a race between a 1000 HP Bugatti Veyron and a Jet Fighter.

The two will start side by side from a standstill. The car will go 1 mile, slow down enough to turn around on a full width runway, then come back the 1 mile. The fighter will take off as quickly as possible, go straight up 1 mile, turn around and come back down to about 100′ off the deck to fly parallel to the car to attempt to cross the finish line first.

Who will win? Check out the video to find out.

Current Events – School Closure

The Regina Public School board is considering the closure of three schools for the upcoming school year. One of the schools is a high school and the other two are elementary schools. Different groups from the attendance area of each school are trying to prevent the schools from closing even though no official decision has yet been made on the status of these three schools. Some of the arguments being put forth by the groups are that school closure will negatively impact the community and the students.

With one of our neighboring schools already closed the impact of school closure is not new to Rouleau and surrounding area. What are your thoughts about school closure within an larger urban centre like Regina? Are the communities impacted in the same way? Is the impact on students the same? What would your reaction be if Rouleau School was being considered for closure? Or being reduced to a K-8 school with all high school students attending somewhere else?
