911 Call Results in Tragedy
A tragic eventhappened recently in Calgary. A toddler was discovered by his parents unconscious and having trouble breathing. A call to 911 was immediately placed and this is where the problems began. The parents were using an internet phone service and when they placed the 911 call EMS was sent to their former location in Mississauga, Ontario not Calgary, AB. Calgary EMS were not dispatched until neighbors phoned and when EMS arrived a half hour after the first call by the parents it was too late. The 18 month old toddler was dead. What are your thoughts on this event? Who should be held accountable for this tragedy and why?
I can’t believe that a stupid mistake on the parents part took the life of a child. Why would you use an internet phone rather than a regular phone, a regular phone would surely be more reliable. Who should be accountable? Well it depends. Were the parents home or did they leave their child unattended? If someone is to be blame the parents should be for the reason that the EMS they called was headed to their old location. This would have been an accident so I wouldn’t say it is entirely their fault.
To further add to this event Alyssa, the internet company had been sending bills to their house in Calgary so the new address was on file but not on the 911 file. The parents are claiming that the company should have updated the files. The internet company is claiming that it was the responsibility of the parents to request the change to the 911 listing. From reading and listening to news reports I believe that the parents were home with the child. Does this change your thoughts at all?
I don’t think it was the internet phones service fault to much. When the family had moved they should have changed their information on where they had moved to for certain reasons like that. But if you have changed the adreess and to where you live and police are not notified of this it makes no sense especially if they had called and it didnt come up with their internet file. If their internet file had showen up they would have seen where they lived but also, the internet company is sort of at fault here to because it should be a manditory question to ask if you are signing up for anything with a phone service.
I think this is a horrible event that i would not wish on anybody. I beleive that it is the Internet phone service provider and parents fault that the 911 address was not changed. For one i think that the phone company should just make a phone call or send out a letter so then everyone can update their information. Then something like this would not happen. Mostly i think it is the parents responsibilty becuase they should of been responsible enough to call the company and let them know that they have relocated.
I think that this event is very tragic and it shouldn’t have happened. I think that fault should be placed upon the Internet phone service and the parents. The phone service should have known that the parents had moved because they were sending their bills there. The parents should also be held accountable because they should know that internet phone services are not very responsible. The parents should have took action into their own hands after waiting so long for the ambulance.
I think this is tereble. The people on the other end should have asked where they are, but instead it took a life. But you also have to think, why didn’t the parents try anything, it couldn’t really get any worse so i think that was a dumb decision on their part. When your child can’t breathe anymore you shouldn’t just sit there at watch him suffocate to death!
It is definately terrible. This is a case of assumption of location and the health force will need to have learned from this experience. I don’t think the phone company is to blame for this. 9/11 should be notified of address changes within 15 days of move in my opinion.
I still think the parents are some what responsible. Yes the company should have updated the address but the parents should have made sure that all the information was accurate. I agree with Sidni that the parents should have gone to further lengths to save their child.
I think that both are at fault in this situation. First of all though, the company should not NEED a request to update the information, it should be mandatory. Why wouldn’t you update it when someone could be relying on it? Does a child need to die in order for them to take action? Maybe the family did not have a house phone. Some people dont. Again, if they called Ontario, then the company should have put them through to the Calgary company so that they could get help. Secondly, I agree with Taylor. If the ambulance does not show up soon, then try and do something! They may not have done it right, but he could have lived.
i think that they are both at fault, i believe that the phone company should automatically change it. The parents should not have to take teh time to change it, but as well maybe they should have taken consideration to it. People should not rely on the ambulance anyways, they never are actaully in the hurry. They show up when pretty much alot of damage is done. Or even breathing is gone.
