Canadian Olympians Underachieving?

It is quickly approaching the midpoint of the Summer Olympics and Canada has yet to claim a medal. Is this a sign that our olympians are underacheiving or as a country are we not that good? Traditionally Canadian athletes excel at the winter olympics so should more emphasis be put on our summer program? Australia did just that and so have the Chinese and it is paying off. China is leading the medal count. Thoughts?

  1. I grew up most of my life in Canada and did live in the US for seven years. Canadians are generally very passive people in comparison to Americans. I think the spirit of competition is not a Canadian trait. We excel in the winter games only because we love those sorts of sports and not because we like to compete with the rest of the world. Sadly, Canada will be recognized for this as being an apathetic nation. We will give foreigners the idea that we are not so much a country of proud people as we are just a nation of people content on living day to day. We definitely need to show we have more spirit, but that would come from leadership. Where is that leadership?

  3. I do agree with Brent, but we also have to think of our atheletes. In China, these kids are raised for their sport, these tiny girls that look like they are fourteen compete against our teams like they were born doing the sport. They will spend six hours in the gym practicing when Canadians have to work and practice. Canada itself is not supporting the atheletes as much as it could. Even watching the news we find out that most of our teams do alot of fundraising to pay for everything that they will need to be the best that they can. Where I disagree with Brent though is that Canada IS a proud country, and spirited. Maybe it is just not as noticable as some other countries, but it is still there. Go Canada!

  4. Very well said A.K.. We are a proud country and it showed by the tear filled eyes in the crowd as the national anthem was played for our gold medal wrestler.

  5. I strongly agree with A.K. Our athletes don’t recieve enough support in terms of funding. All of the training that they work so hard for and wait four years to go to the olympics and they are still worrying about having enough money. I don’t think that it is fair for them to represent Canada to the world and not be supported financially by their country. I think that Canada was just having a hard time getting started. Watching the olympics today I found out that there is a male 10 m diver from Pilot Butte competing and he was able to advance to the next round, along with another canadian diver in the same category. There are so many athletes that you don’t even know about that are doing really good in their sports; I hope that we could show more spirit for those people. I disagree with Brent, I am very proud to be a Canadian and we have tons of spirit. Maybe we just have a different way of showing it. I think you will be able to see more of Canada’s spirit coming out when the winter olympics come to Vancouver in 2010.
