Current Event: Canada’s Child Poverty
A recent story in the Regina Leader Post summarized that child poverty in Canada is still a growing concern. The recent report by the Community Foundations of Canada indicated in the Vital Signs 2008 report it was documented that 1 in 5 children is living in poverty. This is a statistic that has remained relatively unchanged in the last 20 years. In a time when the Canadian economy is thriving and an upcoming federal election should this issue be considered a major issue? Are our politicians giving enough attention to this matter or are politicians only talking about child poverty and then doing nothing about it? What could possibly be done in Canada to reverse this trend?
With the coming election I think that the politicians are willing to say almost anything that is in their beliefs to win our votes over. They can say that they will help the poverty problem, but will we ever see it happen? It is the same as promising to take the soldiers out of Iraq and never actually getting around to it. I definately think that child poverty should be a major issue. These children are our future. They will eventually make the decisions, one may even become Prime Minister. We need to value that. Maybe it is lack of knowledge in the politicians. Some of them have no idea what is actually going on in society, they get someone else to find out and tell them. They need to experience it first hand. They have to see that child poverty is a problem. I don’t think that the children should free load, but they should get the same chance to do things that other more privileged children do.
To go off on another rant, I don’t think that the Bloc Québécois should even be aloud to have a party. All of their seats are based in Quebec. How are they going to look after the whole country if they can only see their province? Watching the debate the other day I saw that all of their plans were focused in on Quebec. If they got elected, thats what would happen. The rest of Canada would be forgotten while Quebec prospered. The country could fall apart. Even if I was to agree with thier beliefs, I don’t think that they would include Saskatchewan. They are basically wanting to separate themselves from the rest of the country. Why let them continue this?
All of the parties have good ideas, none of us can deny it. Why not just meet in the middle? Take everones best ideas and create something that we could all agree on?
I think Child Poverty is a horrible thing that should be dealt with. Would you wan to be helped if you were a child with no money? I think you would!
Canada is such a wealthy country that we can help child poverty disappear in our country and eventually other poor countries. I don’t see why rich countries like the U.S., Canada, China, etc. can’t unite to do something good for the entire world. Our world is totally different than those living in poverty and in poor countries. They don’t have enough for their needs and we have enough for our needs plus our wants. We just throw away money without even thinking about what we are buying; who might have made it or where it came from.
Continueing on with what kosteniuk was saying about the election… Canada just re-elected another minority government where nothing can be decided.
